他最想演的角色是《平凡的世界》里的孙少安，二人有着相似的成长背景：一个出生在1970年代的山东农村，一个出生在1950年代的陕北农村，都在十几岁时因为贫穷而辍学，都不想一辈子面朝黄土背朝天。“文革”末期、改革开放伊始，孙少安因为搞承包、办砖厂，吃了不少苦头；到郭晓东成年时，桎梏已经完全松绑，他看到了更大的世界、获得了更多的机会：1980年代，他跟着电影放映队满村跑，那块幕布拉起了梦想的第一张帆；1990年代初，“坊前乡宣传队”成立，大队书记点名要“能唱会跳”的郭晓东参加，凭借这个优势，他又接连获得了在县印刷厂和邮电局工作的机会。
